The stage is set for a romantic weekend in Rome and the Aldrovandi Villa Borghese***** does not disappoint. A 19th century palace found atop the Pincian Hill, alongside the beautiful Villa Borghese Gardens, the hotel radiates royal charm. Rome’s every point of interest is easily within our reach, from the Colosseum and Trevi fountain to museums and the Pantheon. Despite the city’s draw, however, the charms of such a unique hotel are innumerable; and at the Aldrovandi Villa Borghese*****, we find ourselves happily ensconced in five-star luxury, treated like royalty and more than willing to play the part.

  • Visit Aventine Hill for a look through the Aventine keyhole. You will see the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica rising up at the end of a tree-lined avenue.
  • Sant’Eustachio Café may have made it into the guidebooks, but locals continue to stake their claim to what they consider the best coffee in Rome. Reputedly a best kept secret, Located near the Pantheon, it’s a nice stop off during your tour of the city.
  • NO.AU is ‘knowhow’ in phonetic transcription, and that they do. They certainly know how to charm visitors with their artsy bohemian space, hidden in the back alleys of the Centro Storico. Stop in for an Italian craft beer and one of their small snacks, like hand-cut chips. They also offer more substantial plates, all sourced from small local organic producers.

  • San Clemente is a little publicised gem, a medieval and early-Renaissance church with frescoes by Masolino. In the basement, you can view the remains of a second-century apartment block and a shrine to Mithras. The water from an ancient sewer runs through here, completing the experience.

BY PLANE

  • The main airport serving Rome is Rome Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci Airport, 35.0 km (21.7 mi) southwest of the city centre. Some low-cost airlines however, notably Ryanair, fly into Rome Ciampino Airport, 12 km (7.5 mi) south-southeast of the city centre.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

  • The closest Tram and Bus stop is Aldrovandi served by tram lines 2, 3 and 19 and by night bus line N10.

    The closest metro is Flaminio, at 15 minutes’ walk: Follow Via Alberto Ferrero around the bend, take a right onto Via di Villa Ruffo then left onto Viale Giorgio Washington. Continue straight and at the square take the second left onto Viale Folke Bernadotte. Cut straight across the car park and turn right onto Viale delle Belle. Follow this road round the bend to the right, onto the road for the hotel, Via Ulisse Aldrovandi.
    A little further away is Spanga metro, right next to the Spanish Steps, to and from which the hotel runs a courtesy car service.
